Metadata: 2005, Emu, Lynn and Inner Dowsing, Mussel Survey
Abstract:
Emu was commissioned by Centrica Renewable Energy Ltd (CREL) to undertake survey of fish and shellfish species of conservation and commercial importance and of the epibenthic communities. This was a part of the monitoring programme stipulated within FEPA Licences for the construction of Lyne and Inner Downsing Offshore Windfarm off the Lincolnshire Coast. Results showed mussel abundance to be generally low or absent at most sites, with commercially viable densities limited to specific areas characterized by suitable substrate and bathymetric conditions, particularly sandy or Sabellaria-rich substrates. Species richness and by-catch diversity were highest at locations with Modiolus shell material and Sabellaria crust. Mussel recruitment and survival appeared highly variable and ephemeral, influenced by natural conditions and predation. The surveys conclude that continued and regular monitoring is essential for understanding benthic community dynamics and for informing impact mitigation and environmental management strategies related to offshore wind farm development.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Methodology comprised boat-based tow sampling using commercial fishing vessels, guided by prior Sabellaria spinulosa mapping, with GPS-coordinated site selection, environmental data collection, and laboratory analysis of catches and substrates. |
