Metadata: 2011, MARICO Marine Ltd., Kyle Rhea Tidal Stream Array, Navigation Feasibility Assessment
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to identify whether there are critical navigation issues associated with the development. Analysis of vessel traffic survey data collected in 2010 by Marico Marine was carried out to determine the magnitude and characteristics of vessel transiting Kyle Rhea. The investigation included the analysis of vessel tracks, the comparison of vessel transits relative to tidal state, swept path analysis, concurrent vessel analysis, and the computation of channel width requirements utilising the internationally adopted PIANC methodology.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This report aims to identify the feasibility of Kyle Rhea for SeaGeneration (Kyle Rhea) Ltd in respect of navigation. As such it is not a full navigation risk assessment; and so, although MGN 371 informs this study, it was necessary to develop a methodology suited to the Kyle Rhea situation. Data was collected by a variety of sources including radar and AIS from a station operated continually by Marico survey technicians. AIS broadcasts vessel attribute information, such as length and name, in addition to its location in time and space. Although radar targets do not transmit this information the survey technicians were able to identify vessels usually during the day and by their navigational lights at night to record their type, and where possible their name. The survey was conducted by Marico engineers who are experienced mariners, both in the operation and interpretation of radars, and also the identification of vessels. |
