Metadata: 2025, British Geological Survey, The Crown Estate Research, National Seabed Geology Scoping
Abstract:
This report summarises an investigation by British Geological Survey into the seabed geology needs of developers, researchers and others across multiple marine sectors. Through stakeholder surveys and desk-based research, the report highlights gaps between data requirements and existing data, concluding with recommendations in terms of specific data types to prioritise in future work.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2025, British Geological Survey, The Crown Estate Research, National Seabed Geology Scoping |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 41f71748f37bc3562688d18a7d87fb1e |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | MDE-TCE-134-4114 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2024-09-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2025-12-31 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |
| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | An online survey was conducted in which 82participants, representing at least 60 different organisations, responded to questionsconcerning: access and use of seabed geology data, thematic data needs, regions of interest, and resolution and format. In addition, more than 80 existing primary and derived datasets have been identified that relate to UK seabed geology. These were assessed alongside the survey results to determine a picture of stakeholder needs and priority areas for improvement and development of new datasets. |
