Metadata: 2012-2013, National Physical Laboratory, Zone 3 Dogger Bank Creyke A and B, Underwater Noise Modelling to Support the Dogger Bank Wind Farm Environmental Impact Assessment for Creyke Beck A and Creyke Beck B
Abstract:
This project presents the underwater noise assessment undertaken by the National Physical Laboratory and Loughborough University to estimate the likely underwater noise levels generated by pile driving of wind turbine foundations for the Dogger Bank Creyke Beck A and Creyke Beck B projects, and assess the likely impact of subsea noise from construction, operation and decommissioning phases of the wind farm projects in support of the Environmental Impact Assessment. Underwater sound emissions were modelled for a number of single sound sources (piles) within Creyke Beck A and Creyke Beck B. In addition, multiple concurrent sound sources were also modelled.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The noise propagation modelling employed for this study has been undertaken by the National Physical Laboratory, based on an energy flux solution by Weston (1976), which is capable of propagation over large distances whilst accounting for range dependent bathymetry and frequency-dependent absorption. The energy flux model has been implemented, with the frequency-dependent absorption formula of Thorpe (1967), with the effect of surface scattering included, and with averaged seabed properties over the region (Hamilton 1980), using the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) Digital Atlas bathymetry data over an area of approximately 180km by 180km. |
