Metadata: 2014, Jon Ford Environmental, Race Bank, Saltmarsh Bird Monitoring
Abstract:
Data was collected between 16 April 2014 and 21 June 2014 on the species, number, and general behaviour of birds in the saltmarsh area within approximately one kilometre either side of the Race Bank export cable route landfall. The report in this series outlines the methodology and results of surveys, but does not attempt analysis of any impacts on bird species.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Data was collected between 16 April 2014 and 21 June 2014 on the species, number, and general behaviour of birds in the saltmarsh area within approximately one kilometre either side of the Race Bank export cable route landfall. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This following report outlines the proposed methodology for gathering data and the results but does not attempt analysis of any impacts on the species recorded. Due to concerns from Natural England, the potential of disturbing breeding birds and for safety reasons, survey work was restricted to the flood defence bank which forms a good vantage point. It does not however allow the surveyor the close proximity to all areas required in a more formalised breeding bird survey. This methodology therefore is a bespoke vantage point/breeding bird survey of the saltmarsh situated one kilometre either side of the proposed cable route: - Three surveys per month through April, May and June (where possible at least one week apart) were undertaken by two surveyors situated on the flood bank, each monitoring one kilometre each side of the cable route. - Each survey consisted of a six hour watch starting from sunrise or possibly delayed for up to two hours until good visibility occurs. Each six hour watch is divided into four 1.5 hour â??countsâ??. (One count was missed on 25/04/14 due to deteriorated weather). - The species, number, location, and behaviour of all of birds was marked onto a field map using standard BTO nomenclature and a full list of birds seen within the survey area documented throughout the watch. - The one kilometre flood bank was walked by each surveyor once in each 1.5 hour count, while continuing to map birds, to better determine the location of breeding bird territories. - Survey work was only undertaken during good visibility. - All field work was undertaken by Jon Ford Environmental Consultancy. |
