Metadata: 2012, Orca Marine, Brough Head Wave Farm, Marine Cultural Heritage Baseline Assessment
Abstract:
The Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) was commissioned by Xodus Group to provide a baseline assessment of the marine historic environment assets that may be affected by a proposed marine renewable energy development, which forms part of a wave farm at Brough Head, off the north-west coast of Mainland Orkney. The area to be assessed is around Outshore Point, between Point of Howana Geo, Northdyke, and Sand Geo, Marwick. Scientific Underwater Logistics And Diving (SULA Diving) were requested by ORCA to carry out a Desk Based Assessment (DBA) of the possible submerged cultural heritage along the offshore cable route. This assessment will identify any sites of cultural heritage significance that might be affected by the proposed development and make some initial suggestions for managing any identified issues and impacts concerning the cultural heritage resource.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Coverage of geophysical surveys available to ORCA is shown in Figure 1. The combined datasets all cover the development area. The methods, resolution limitations and results of the subsea surveys by Aspect Land and Hydrographic Surveys were presented in a report (Thomson & Campbell, 2011). A summary of the rationale, survey methods, data processing and limitations is reproduced below from the report. On the instructions of RPS Consulting, Aspect Surveys mobilised two inshore survey vessels Remote Sensor and Marine Sensor at Stromness, Orkney for the conduct of A4806 geophysical site survey off the northwest coast of Mainland Orkney around Brough Head in August 2011 (Thomson & Campbell, 2011: 3). The boundary of the survey area to be reviewed by ORCA under contract from Xodus Group Ltd lies between the inshore limit of the existing Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA) data (the 26m contour) and the 5m contour, which is the principal area of interest for siting Oyster wave generators (which will roughly be at the 13m contour). ORCA examined the data between the northings 1020000N and 1024000N, which gave a buffer zone of c. 200m to the north and south of the project area. The geophysical instruments used included a multi-beam echosounder (MBES) and a side scan sonar (SSS) interfaced with a magnetometer. No sub-bottom profiler had been used due to the substrate being largely bedrock (e-mail from Peter Tipler, Xodus Group). The objective of the surveys was to provide geophysical data to determine geological conditions and hazards affecting the planning, design and installation of the marine energy project around Outshore Point. |
