Metadata: 2010, National Physical Laboratory, Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, Underwater Noise Monitoring During Marine Piling
Abstract:
The work described here was undertaken to monitor the radiated underwater acoustic noise from marine pile-driving by the installation of foundations during the construction phase of the Round 2 offshore wind farm at Sheringham Shoal. The measurement and analysis work included in this preliminary report were conducted during June 2010 by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and its partners, Loughborough University (LU) and Gardline Environmental Limited (GEL). The objective of the work was to monitor the noise radiated during the marine piling phase of construction in accordance with the conditions of the license issued (FEPA 9.35) to Statoil/Scira UK to allow an assessment to be made of the likely impact of the acoustic noise on marine life in the area. To do this, a total of 4 pile installations were be measured. This report describes the results of the noise assessment for the pile-driving during the installation of foundations I4, H6, E1 and G6, which were the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 8th foundation pieces installed, respectively. Where appropriate, the results are compared with the predictions made during previous work for the Environmental Statement undertaken by Scira in 2006. Comparisons are also drawn with the measured results from other researchers, including those obtained from wind farm developments in the UK, the Netherlands and Germany. The results are further presented in the context of their impact on marine mammals and fish.
