Metadata: 2012, CMACS, West of Duddon Sands, Benthic Baseline Survey
Abstract:
Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Ltd (CMACS) was appointed by JV West of Duddon Sands Ltd (JV WoDS) to undertake baseline benthic ecological characterisation surveys for the West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm (WoDS OWF). The overall aim of the survey was to obtain baseline data on the subtidal benthic environment (specifically benthic macroinvertebrate infauna and sediments) to support a programme of monitoring to meet conditions set out in the project FEPA Licence (deemed Marine Licence) 33317/10/01. The survey was undertaken as a combined mobilisation with monitoring at Walney I and II and Ormonde offshore wind farms. Offshore survey work at WoDS commenced on 20 May and was completed on 20 June 2012.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The camera survey took place between the 17th May and 22nd of June 2012. To obtain good quality imagery the survey was targeted at neap tides following periods of settled weather to ensure as far as possible that sediment in the water column had settled out of suspension. A drop down camera with clearwater housing suitable for use in low visibility/high turbidity environments was deployed to the seabed, whilst the vessel was held stationery over the target using the vessel’s DGPS and DP systems. The lead biologist captured and logged stills and video imagery from each site in addition to associated data such as depth, time and brief notes on the sediment type and any identifiable epifauna. The camera was deployed three times within approximately 1-5m of each target position. Particular attention was paid for the potential presence of any Annex 1 habitat or rare/sensitive species. In addition to the nineteen camera locations, four 300m camera transects crossing the proposed cable routes (A, B, C and D) perpendicularly were surveyed. Video footage was obtained along the length of the 300m transects with still images taken every 10m. At least 31 images were taken for each transect. Field observations were recorded as for the camera survey methods mentioned above. The four transects are displayed in Figure 4: Camera transect locations along the proposed cable route. Grab sampling was undertaken with a 0.1m2 Day grab at all stations between the 30th May and 20th June. A standard weighted Day grab with a 0.1m2 sample area was used for all sediment sampling. The majority of samples were collected from within 5m of the target location. Triplicate grab samples were acquired from each site. Upon retrieval of each grab sample the position, date, time and water depth were recorded, along with a description of the volume of sample and the sediment type. A digital photograph of each faunal grab sample was taken prior to any sieving. Notes were made on sediment type, colour, volume and any species of note in each grab sample (Appendix 2). Grab samples of less than 5 litres (or 2.5 litres on hard-packed sands) in volume were rejected. Samples were also rejected if the grab jaws were not properly closed. After initial observations and photographs a representative subsample of approximately 500ml was removed using a clean plastic scoop for particle size analysis (PSA) and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. All sediment samples were kept as cold as possible and frozen immediately upon arrival at the CMACS Eastham laboratory. |
