Metadata: 2004-2006, Emu Ltd, Kentish Flats Offshore Wind farm, Fisheries Comparative Study
Abstract:
As part of the monitoring programme stipulated within the FEPA Licence for the construction of the Kentish Flats windfarm development in the outer Thames estuary, Emu Ltd. was commissioned to perform a series of fisheries surveys. The surveys were intended to establish baseline conditions and to subsequently determine changes in individual species populations on completion of the construction activities at the windfarm site. The fisheries surveys were undertaken on a seasonal basis and comprised of one-day surveys working out of Whitstable harbour aboard the commercially licensed trawler “Our Sarah Jayne”. The surveys comprised of trawls within specified areas within the windfarm and in outlying reference areas. Two types of trawl were used, a Triple-rig otter trawl, used to target bottom dwelling species, and a bass trawl used to target pelagic species.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Trawls were conducted through the main windfarm site within survey target areas running along the tidal axis and between the lines of the turbine array (See Figure 1). Two reference areas were also sampled in order that results obtained during both pre-construction and operational phase surveys may be compared within the context of the natural variability of the local sea area. Each tow was approximately 2km in length. On a number of occasions, the 2km trawl line was completed in two tows rather than the one tow originally proposed. This was because of the large amount of benthic substrate material that was collected part way along some of the trawl lines, which precluded safe landing of the catch and could potentially cause damage to the gear. In such cases, the trawl nets were retrieved, emptied and quickly re-deployed to the end of the trawl line. Co-ordinates of trawl haul and re-deployment locations are provided within the sample logs in Appendix A. |
