Abstract:
The Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CMACS) Ltd were contracted by Sea scape energy to provide a baseline assessment of the benthic communities of the wind farm and surrounding marine environment so as to undertake monitoring as specified within the FEPA licence awarded to Seascape and identify any impacts to the marine environment which may arise as a result of the wind farms construction. A grab sampling survey was undertaken during October 2005 by CMACS, during the pre-construction phase of the project, to provide information concerning the infaunal benthic populations and the sub-tidal sediment types in and around the development area as part of the 2005 baseline program. Sites were selected so as to sample sediments within the Burbo Bank development area representing different habitats, and up and down drift conditions. Site locations were also selected in the near-field area of the monopile foundations to determine scour effects and within the area affected by sediment transport and deposition. A collection of grab stations was also located along the export cable and at several sites comparatively remote to the wind farm development area, both within and outside the tidal excursion. The latter were selected to assess far field affects and those outside the tidal excursion were selected as controls. In addition to this grab survey a beam trawl survey was also implemented at the same time to allow the provision of data with regard to the epifaunal benthic populations within and around the development area as part of the 2005 baseline program.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Benthic Grab Sampling The survey was carried out using the survey vessel RV â??Aquadynamicâ?? operating out of Liverpool marina and returning to berth daily. A total of 20 sites were sampled, the first and furthest inshore (site 20) being visited on 11th September 2005. Unfortunately, poor weather and rough sea conditions precluded the continuation of the survey until early October. The remaining sites were sampled and the survey completed in two days over the 5th and 6th of October. Sample sites were located both within and outside of the proposed wind farm array, including a collection of sites along the planned export cable (see Figure 1 and Appendix 6.1 for site locations). This survey was designed to determine the near-field and far-field effects of the proposed development at sites close and remote to the Burbo Bank development area, including sites inshore of and aligned along the export cable. Where possible, a total of three replicate sub-tidal sediment samples were taken at each grab station to assess faunal composition. In addition a sub-sample of each replicate sample was also taken for the purpose of Particle Size Analysis (PSA). Benthic Trawl Sampling The survey was conducted over two days on the 7th and 11th of October using the survey vessel â??Aquadynamicâ?? operating out of Liverpool Marina returning to berth on a daily basis. A standard CEFAS 2m beam trawl with a 4mm square mesh cod end equipped with a chain matrix was used, being towed at each site for a distance of 300m at a speed of 2 knots to allow sufficient warp for the trawl to â??fishâ? the bottom properly. All tows were undertaken into the prevailing current and 12 sites were surveyed in total (see Figure 2 and Appendix 6.6 for site locations). |
