Metadata: 2018 - 2019, Natural Power Consultants, Blyth Demonstration Site, Fish and Shellfish Study
Abstract:
Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Ltd (BODL) has developed an offshore wind demonstration site off the Northumberland Coast close to the Port of Blyth. The report in this series has been produced in order to provide BODL with a post-construction comparison to baseline (EIA) and pre-construction characterisation of the fish and shellfish populations present in and around the Project. This report presents the findings of the otter trawl, set nets and potting surveys, which were undertaken by Natural Power Consultants Ltd.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Ltd (BODL) has developed an offshore wind demonstration site off the Northumberland Coast close to the Port of Blyth. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Three different methods (mirroring EIA and pre-construction surveys) using different fishing gear were selected to provide a baseline of the species present and their distribution in and around the wind farm site: • Trawl surveys using an otter trawl; • Potting survey; and • Static netting surveys using gill nets. The survey methodologies were approved by the MMO prior to survey commencement. Trawl and gill net surveys provide information on demersal fish species, while pots provide information on larger mobile invertebrates such as lobsters and crabs (Table 3.1). Throughout the inshore area of this site, it was not possible to trawl due to both the nature of the ground (rocky) and the presence of fixed gear (i.e. the pots and nets of local fishermen). Under these conditions, static nets were set in place of a trawl survey. Trawl and static net surveys were undertaken quarterly within the periods of marine seasons; potting surveys are undertaken on a biannual (twice per year) basis (in summer and winter) to reflect the target species migration patterns (Table 3.1). As surveys at sea are vulnerable to delay due to bad weather, surveying at regular intervals may not always be possible; therefore, each survey was set to take place within a specified marine season. Winter was defined as January to March, spring as April to June, summer as July to September, and autumn as October to December. |
