Metadata: 2010, British Geological Survey, The South Coast Regional Environmental Characterisation Project - Interpretation and Analysis
Abstract:
"The aim of the South Coast Regional Environmental Characterisation (REC) is to provide an environmental reference statement defining marine and seabed conditions within the study area. The REC is based upon the interpretation of MALSF survey data acquired in 2007 and a more extensive historical survey dataset acquired by the British Geological Survey, Cefas, Sussex Sea Fisheries District Committee and the South Coast Dredging Association (SCDA). A review of existing literature was also conducted. The characterisation and interpretation included an assessment of the geological, biological, oceanographic, archaeological, fisheries and conservation attributes of the area. Analysis of the benthic infauna and epifauna communities have been combined with an evaluation of their associated physical conditions to produce a habitat and biotope assessment based in part on the European EUNIS classification system. The results produced by the characterisation project will be significant for marine spatial planning by providing a more comprehensive dataset to inform and improve decison making on developments such as conservation, fisheries, heritage, aggregates and renewables."
