Abstract:
Hornsea Project Two is a second development in the Hornsea Zone in the North Sea off the east coast of the UK. The development has the potential to comprise of several wind farm arrays in the centre of the Hornsea Zone, adjacent to Project One. The benthic characterisation survey of the Project Two Study area was conducted over seven days in July 2012. The results of this survey will inform the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, in support of the planning (and consent) application for development of Project Two. The benthic ecology survey, including seabed video, sediment and contaminants sampling and epibenthic trawls was undertaken to acquire data to provide a robust benthic characterisation of the Project Two area.

Work was undertaken on an ebbing spring tide, to allow access to the lowest reaches of the shore and to maximise working time. Surveys included classification and mapping of the intertidal biotopes present, together with collection of quantitative core samples for information on infaunal populations, including biomass data. Sediment samples were also taken for PSA and contaminants analysis during the survey. 2.3 In the field, base maps derived from aerial photography and Ordnance Survey were annotated with total species inventories where possible. Intertidal mapping recording forms were utilised, including the polygon, waypoint, photo and target note log forms. The methodology employed followed the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) procedural guidelines for intertidal mapping (Wyn et al., 2006). 2.4 Visual observations were recorded for spatial changes in sediment and biota whilst noting corresponding co-ordinates using a Garmin 78s handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) unit, ensuring an accuracy of better than 10 m (WGS84 datum). Polygon boundaries were identified by a change in the dominance or occurrence of conspicuous species or communities, in combination with changes in physical habitat characteristics. |
