Metadata: 2003-2005, RPS, Humber Gateway, Marine Mammal Survey
Abstract:
RPS, commissioned by the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies, conducted a marine mammal survey from October 2003 to April 2005 to assess the distribution, abundance, and seasonal trends of grey seals, common seals, and harbour porpoises near the Humber Gateway Offshore Wind Farm off the Holderness coast and the wider south-east England area. Findings confirmed year-round presence—particularly of harbour porpoise and grey seal—with notable seasonal peaks, but overall numbers were low to moderate compared to other UK regions. The study highlighted the importance of using specialist observers for accurate population estimates, the need to account for seasonal trends in environmental impact assessments, and emphasised compliance with UK and EU conservation legislation. Recommendations include ongoing monitoring to capture sensitive periods, further assessment of potential anthropogenic impacts, targeted mitigation to protect regulated populations, and the strengthening of international cooperative frameworks to safeguard threatened marine mammals.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Boat and aerial bird surveys were conducted during which incidental sightings of marine mammals were recorded. In addition, a dedicated marine mammal surveyor was used during four of the vessel-based survey trips. The survey utilised vessel-based and aerial methodologies, systematic twice-monthly observations, dedicated marine mammal observers, and analytical techniques such as GLM and distance sampling, alongside a literature review of relevant legal frameworks. |
