Abstract:
In September 2014, DONG Energy contracted EGS International Ltd (EGSi) to undertake a preconstruction geological survey along specified segments of the Inter-array cables (IAC) which have not been previously surveyed at the planned Race Bank offshore wind farm site. The geological survey aims to provide additional geophysical data in order to deliver an enhanced understanding of the geological conditions of the topmost 10 m below the seabed as well as providing detailed information on the shallow soil conditions along all planned sections of the IAC. In addition to surveying parts of the IAC, additional geophysical data was also asked to be provided for small selected segments of the export cable in The Wash. During survey operations, these export cable segments were omitted from the survey requirements by the client due to the high quantity of fishing gear present and the high risk posed to the vessel and survey equipment. During operations, EGSi were requested by the client to acquire additional high resolution MBES data over the all planned inter-array cable routes, as well as six specific areas which required ultra-high resolution data acquired. Geophysical operations were undertaken using high-frequency multibeam system, side-scan sonar (SSS) in conjunction with a USBL system, a parametric sub-bottom profiler (SBP) and an Ultra-high Resolution seismic sparker system (UHRS).

Vessel mobilisation took place between 19th and 24th September 2014 alongside Grimsby Fish Docks and offshore on the Race Bank OWF site. The navigation and positioning, MBES, USBL and SBP equipment were all already mobilised on the vessel when the vessel arrives in Grimsby, therefore calibrations of this equipment were not required. Further MBES verifications were conducted during the mobilisation period on 23rd September 2014, including a repeatability test, in order to verify that all applied offsets and settings were correct. Dry and wet tests of the SSS towfish and spares were conducted on 21st and 23 September 2014, respectively. Geophysical survey operations were completed on 13th October 2014 and demobilisation of all geophysical equipment, excluding the SBP, occurred on 14th October 2014. MBES-only operations continued until 17th October 2014 when the vessel was demobilised. Horizontal positioning has been transformed to the ETRS89, UTM-31N projection. An Applanix POs MV 320E was used as the primary horizontal positioning system on the EGS Pioneer with a C&C Technologies 3050 DGPS being used as the secondary back-up positioning system. All horizontal positions were interfaced from the POS MV into QPS QINSy where positions for the vessel, MBES, SBP and UHRS systems were computed using the applied offsets and logged. |
