Metadata: 2013, Helix Canyon, Skerries, Geotechnical Site Investigation
Abstract:
Canyon Offshore Limited (COL) conducted this Geotechnical Site Investigation utilising the ROVDrill MK2.1 system on behalf of Marine Current Turbines (MCT), with Gardline Geosciences providing Geotechnical services and reporting, including borehole management planning. The site survey comprised seabed video and geotechnical rock coring boreholes utilising Canyon’s ROVDrill Mk2.1 Subsea drill unit with Gardline Geosciences providing Geotechnical services and reporting.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Canyon Offshore Limited (COL) conducted this Geotechnical Site Investigation utilising the ROVDrill MK2.1 system on behalf of Marine Current Turbines (MCT), with Gardline Geosciences providing Geotechnical services and reporting, including borehole management planning. The site survey comprised seabed video and geotechnical rock coring boreholes utilising Canyon’s ROVDrill Mk2.1 Subsea drill unit with Gardline Geosciences providing Geotechnical services and reporting. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The COL operated ROVDrill Mk2.1 is a self-contained drill rig which was remotely operated from the DP2 vessel Deep Cygnus via an umbilical. All tooling is self-contained within the ROVDrill system through its integrated racking system. The rig is deployed via the vessel’s heave compensated heavy lift crane. Canyon’s ROVDrill unit comprises a rotary drill head, ROV manipulators and sample storage racks to cater for a variety of operational requirements. The ROVDrill Mk2.1 uses NWY drill pipes, 3m in length, with optional casing to enable advancement through the borehole. Further details of the ROVDrill MK2.1 specifications and capabilites are presented in Appendix I. A total of two locations BH-SK01 and BH-SK03 were sampled within the Skerries tidal array. One retest was carried out at BH-SK01 location in an attempt to achieve a full penetration of 15.00m. Repeat tests were annotated with the suffix A. A third location was scheduled at BH-SK02, however, an ROV visual survey of the intended boring site was unable to locate suitable ROVDrill landing areas due to large rocks on seabed. This was encountered across the entire Skerries tidal array site during operations. Rock samples were acquired using the Canyon ROVDrill MK2.1 system. Cores obtained with the T2-86 Core Barrel with samples retained in plastic liners of 72mm internal diameter. Core obtained using a surface set T2-86 Core Barrel were extruded from the barrel onto a half split liner before being capped and sealed. Analysis and logging of core samples were conducted by Gardline Geosciences in a dedicated offshore laboratory. Further onshore testing is scheduled to be conducted at Gardline Geosciences Laboratory facilities in Great Yarmouth, UK. |
