Metadata: 2003-2004, PMSS, North Hoyle, Annual FEPA Monitoring Report
Abstract:
The Annual FEPA Monitoring Report assessed the environmental impacts of the North Hoyle Offshore Wind Farm during 2003–2004, in accordance with FEPA licence 31579/05/0. Using a combination of subtidal sediment sampling at 20 locations, suspended sediment monitoring, benthic and fish community surveys, bird observations, and supplementary data from CEFAS trawl surveys and fisherman consultations, the study aimed to evaluate changes associated with wind farm construction and operation. The findings indicated no significant increase in suspended sediments due to construction, and only minor, localized changes in benthic and invertebrate communities, with dominant species and overall assemblage structure largely unchanged from baseline conditions. While some bird species (notably red-throated diver, cormorant, and shag) altered their spatial distribution during construction, most others were unaffected, and there was no evidence of risk to key conservation bird species. No major effects were observed on fish or marine mammals, and long-term impacts, particularly regarding migratory fish, were recommended for further monitoring. Overall, the series concluded minimal environmental impact from the wind farm to date, emphasizing the importance of ongoing data collection to detect potential future changes.
