Metadata: 2002, Amphibian, Reptile and Mammal Conservation Limited, Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm, Protected Species Assessment
Abstract:
Amphibian, Reptile and Mammal Conservation Ltd were contracted by Hydrosearch Associated Ltd to undertake a protected species and BAP species walk-over habitat assessment to determine the potential impact of three potential cable routes from Holland haven Country park, near Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, to an existing electricity station north west of Great Holland Common. Surveys have confirmed the presence of Great Crested Newts in the pond within the former quarry area close to the existing toilet block in the Country Park and adjacent to the proposed site for the directional drilling compound. A licence from DEFRA will, therefore, be required regardless of which cable route is finally chosen. This would necessitate the installation of amphibian exclusion fencing and, depending on the habitat enclosed, a trapping programme to remove animals from the footprint. The habitat assessment has confirmed the presence of Water Vole, Brown Hare, Barn Owl and two species of reptiles within the survey corridor. At least two other reptile species, Adder and Slow-worm, are known to exist within the general area. Since all three of the proposed routes commence from the quarry area in the Country Park, the impact of the scheme on reptiles will be high and will probably necessitate a translocation on some scale depending upon the actual location within the site. A further assessment in this area will be required once the precise route-line is known.
