Metadata: 2004-2009, ECON Ecological, Dudgeon, Update to the Ornithological Assessment with Survey Data
Abstract:
The avifauna of shallow sea areas such as the Greater Wash Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) area along the United Kingdom (UK) east coast is typically comprised of a mixture of ‘true’ seabird species (e.g. petrel, shearwater, gannet, cormorants, skua, gull, tern and auk) spending a part of their annual life cycle at sea (e.g. divers and seaduck) and a wide range of species (e.g. waterfowl, wader and passerine) on migration both to and from the UK and Continental Europe. An offshore wind farm could in theory have an effect on a range of species other than just seabirds, as a result of the nature of the different potential impacts. The latter are typically thought to include: · Mortality as a result of collision with wind turbine generator (WTG) blades, towers and ancillary structures during operation; · Disturbance and displacement from preferred areas used for feeding, roosting, resting, moulting or passage, during the construction, operation and decommissioning phases; and · Indirect effects through changes in habitat or prey supply during construction and operation.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Ornithological character of the Dudgeon site The primary datasets available to characterise the ornithological value of the Dudgeon site are: • A specific boat based survey programme of 30 surveys from December 2007 to December 2009 inclusive, collected by ECON Ltd; and • Fourteen aerial surveys data gathered from winter 2004 / 2005 to summer 2006 in the generic aerial survey programme of the Greater Wash SEA area, collected by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) on behalf of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI, 2006), and the Department for Business, Energy and Regulatory Reform (BERR, 2007). The latter dataset was fully analysed in the Dudgeon Environmental Statement published by Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited (Royal Haskoning, 2009), and as no further aerial surveys have been undertaken since that publication, no further analysis of aerial data was undertaken for the present document. Information on seasonal patterns of abundance and distribution of key species, derived from aerial surveys, is included in the following analysis, but reference should be made to the previous document for a complete detailed account of aerial survey results. In addition to these data sources, a series of sources of literature were thoroughly assessed to set the context of the birds recorded at Dudgeon and the likely impact of the site. These are outlined below (see Section 2.1.4). |
