Metadata: 2010, Turner and Townsend, Blyth NaREC Offshore Demonstrator Site, Cable Shore Landing Study
Abstract:
The National Renewable Energy Centre Limited (Narec) is in the process of developing an offshore wind farm test site in the North Sea near Blyth, Northumberland. It is currently proposed that the test site will consist of up to four pre-consented arrays which will provide a facility for wind turbine manufacturers and developers (tenants) to deploy prototype or demonstration turbines and foundations. The offshore arrays will be connected to a Narec onshore substation using a combination of offshore and onshore cable systems presently anticipated to be insulated for 33 kV. The precise location and installation conditions for the offshore cables are currently unknown. In order to facilitate development of the cable routes, Narec has requested Turner & Townsend to model the 33 kV cable installations from the location of the offshore electrical connection facility to the submarine/land cable transition pits which are to be located in the vicinity of a railway embankment at Cambois, Northumberland. In this regard Mott MacDonald Limited is subcontracted to Turner and Townsend to prepare a report on cable options including ratings and other technical issues. The purpose of the cable rating study is to study only those areas that will negatively affect the current carrying capability of the circuit and to aid understanding of various aspects of the route and their effects on the current rating of the cable circuits.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Narec is planning to develop the infrastructure for an off-shore wind farm test facility that will consist of a maximum of four arrays with up to five WTGs in each array. Currently the WTGs are expected to be at the leading edge of present developments and to have a capacity in the range of 5 to 10 MW each. It is envisaged that the WTGs will be interconnected at 33 kV with each array having its own 33 kV cable connection into a new Narec owned 33/66 kV substation with a single point of connection to the local distribution network. Narec is co-operating with other known Developers with intentions to bring wind farm reticulation ashore to the 275 kV Blyth Substation (formerly Blyth Power Station) owned by National Grid and the 66 kV bus connected to it. The capacity of the connection currently under negotiation with NEDL is for a maximum infeed of 99 MW. The route for the 33 kV cables is not yet decided but is planned to make landfall somewhere along the Cambois coastline in the near vicinity of Cambois railway underpass and former site of Blyth Power Station. |
