Metadata: 2014, Subacoustech Environmental, Gunfleet Sands 3, Monitoring and Assessment of Operational Subsea Noise
Abstract:
Subacoustech Environmental Ltd has undertaken measurements of underwater noise at Gunfleet Sands 3 Demonstrator Wind Farm whilst the turbines were operational. Background noise measurements were undertaken in March 2013 prior to the operational phase of the wind farm. On 29th and 30th July 2014, underwater noise measurements were taken along transects extending away from the operational turbines. The measured data have been analysed and presented herein and shows that there has been negligible increase in the sound pressure levels compared to the levels measured prior to the turbines being made operational.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | This survey represents DONG Deliverable 731. The operational underwater noise survey at Gunfleet Sands 3 site was undertaken on 29th and 30th July 2014. The survey was undertaken from a boat, Sophie Lea, which was boarded in Brightlingsea harbour on each day before heading out to the Gunfleet Sands wind farm site. All underwater sound vessel based measurements conducted as part of this study were undertaken using a Brüel and Kjær Type 8106 low noise hydrophone, which is able to measure underwater sound to levels well below sea state zero noise. Measurements were taken on transects with the turbine as an end-point, either travelling towards or away from the turbine. A summary of the ranges of measurements, the start time and tidal state for each transect undertaken on Day 1 and 2 of the operational noise survey are shown in Table 3-2 and Table 3-3, respectively. The wind speed and direction and sea state over each day is also included in the tables. On Day 1 measurements were taken along four transects. On Day 2 measurements were taken along six transects. It should be noted that divers were working during slack water on both days of the survey. Dive support vessels were anchored and measurements were taken when engines were switched off. Measurements close to the turbines on some transects were limited due to the vessels’ anchor lines. This limited efforts to determine the source level and the sound pressure levels in the near field. However, measurements were taken as close as 30 m from an operational turbine on 30th July 2014. |
