Metadata: 2013, ESG, Burbo Bank Extension, Intertidal Geophysical Survey
Abstract:
In October 2013 Environmental Scientifics Group (ESG) were commissioned by Dong Energy UK (DONG) to conduct an intertidal geophysical survey over an area of foreshore at Rhyl in Denbighshire. The area to be surveyed is the proposed cable landing point from an extension to the existing Burbo Bank Offshore Windfarm site. A detailed specification was provided which stated the objective of the investigation was as follows: 1. Detect Potential UXO’s 2. Provide Topography for the entire investigation area 3. Provide sub-bottom data This will be used to assist with the design, consenting and construction of the proposed export cable route. The scope of work for the intertidal operations, specified the following: 1. Multi-sensor magnetometer survey 2. RTK GPS Survey 3. Seismic refraction survey of the centreline of the proposed cable route. The survey was carried out in accordance with the specification and works were conducted between 27 November 2013 and 13 December 2013.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | For the topographic survey using the towed array and to position and level each of the geophones and shot points, a Leica GS25 GNSS receiver system was utilised. The instrument logged positional data from the GPS constellation and applied corrections to the data to provide very accurate positions and levels. Corrections were received from the Leica Smartnet system which is subscription based with data being provided via the GSM data network. For the towed array, a Trimble DMS212 GPS system receiving differential corrections broadcast from the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLA) Beacon Service was used as a secondary positioning system on board the ArgoCat to aid navigation along the pre defined run lines. The positional data from the GPS’s were logged and used by the navigation computer, a high specification laptop supporting Trimbles HydroPro navigation software. The navigation software allowed the surveyor to log antenna position, offset and layback position, magnetic field and heading with reference to a single time frame. The heading data were critical to allow the calculation of the various sensors positions simultaneously. |
