Abstract:
Marine Restoration Potential (MaRePo) project is a study which explores the habitat restoration potential of some key threatened and declining (subtidal) marine habitats as defined by the OSPAR convention: kelp forest, maerl beds, native oyster (Ostrea edulis) beds, horse mussel (Modiolus modiolus) beds, and sea pen and burrowing megafauna communities. These habitats were chosen as they occurred within English waters and were known to have some possibility for active or passive restoration interventions. This project uses a spatial analysis approach to investigate the current, historic, and potential future distribution of these habitats in English waters (out to 200 nautical miles (nm) from the shore). The Marine Restoration Potential + Enhancement project (MaRePo+) builds on the Marine Restoration Potential (MaRePo) pilot study, which mapped the restoration potential of some of the OSPAR known threatened and declining marine habitats in English waters. This report provides the outputs of Work Package 1, which focuses on refining the initial environmental habitat potential models for kelp, native oyster and horse mussel beds, and sea-pen and burrowing megafauna habitats. The datasets from this research will be published a few weeks after the reports are published on the Marine Data Exchange.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | For modelling climate change, BIO-ORACLE data on near seabed temperature estimations on decadal timescales (Assis et al., 2018) were used to examine the degree of climatic variability that areas of habitat restoration potential will experience. Due to a lack of physiological data on species-specific response in metabolic rates to change in seabed temperatures or sufficient historic information of the extent and distribution of the habitats considered in MaRePo+, a temperature anomaly approach was chosen to investigate which geographical regions are likely to experience higher rates of change and are thus likely to experience more environmental stress, potentially making them more susceptible to climate change impacts. Predicting restoration potential of subtidal habitats in English waters is difficult due to the inherent variability in environmental conditions, insufficient species distribution and extent data over space and time, and because empirical research on restoration potential of marine ecosystems is limited at best. As a result, restoration potential model predictions can be highly variable depending on the data available and the predictive model used. Refining the habitat restoration potential models presented in the MaRePo pilot study by including new species occurrence data and additional physical parameters that further define habitat suitability has resulted in a new set of restoration potential maps for kelp, native oysters, horse mussels and sea-pen and burrowing megafauna habitats. The new maps show revised habitat potential extents from those described in the pilot project, and due to the model improvements undertaken in this project we have increased confidence in the new model outputs. The constraints modelling has further refined the original restoration potential areas, resulting in maps that show areas where restoration could more realistically be carried out with more likely positive outcomes (see Table 1 and Table 2 for summary results). This, alongside identifying areas where climate change impacts may reduce the chances of sustained restoration success, can be used to prioritise areas for marine habitat restoration. |
