| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2011-2012, CMACS, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2, Years 2 and 3 Benthic Monitoring |
| Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | Years 2 and 3 Benthic Monitoring |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 8eeecbb0-8883-4156-b547-9a8f273b7050 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | TCE-551 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2011-05-19 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2012-06-13 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |
| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | The reports present results and analysis of benthic environmental data collected as part of a monitoring programme at Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm in year 2 (2011) and year 3 (2012). |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Grab samples were obtained using a standard weighted 0.1m2 Day grab; this was the same design used in the 2007 and 2010 benthic surveys. This design of grab is appropriate for use at the survey area where the predominant sediment is fine sand/mud. The grab was deployed using a hydraulic winch while the vessel was held stationary over the target by dynamic positioning linked to differential GPS, providing sub-metre positional accuracy for the vessel and 1-3m accuracy for the deployed grab depending on water depth and currents. In 2011 all samples were taken within 8 metres of the target position (details in Appendix 1). Mean distance to target was <2m. Survey protocol required that samples be rejected if they were of less than 5 litres (or 2.5 litres on hard-packed sands). Upon retrieval of a successful grab, sampled position, date, time and water depth were recorded (details in Appendix 1 and Appendix 2). A digital photograph of the contents of each faunal grab was taken after draining (unwashed) over a 1mm sieve. Notes were made on sediment type, colour including any signs of anoxia, volume, obvious species observed and the presence of potential Annex 1 habitat indicators (e.g. aggregations of Sabellaria spinulosa). After initial observations, photographs and once excess water had been allowed to drain away (but before washing); a representative sub-sample amounting to approximately 500ml was removed for particle size analysis (PSA) and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis using a plastic spoon. These sub-samples were stored in a cool box in labelled foil trays and frozen immediately upon arrival back at the CMACS Ltd laboratory (1 day after the end of the survey and within 2 days of collection). Once the sub-sample had been removed, each sample was gently washed through a 1mm mesh using a low pressure seawater hose. Sediments passing through the sieve were discarded and the material retained on the sieve transferred to a labelled bucket. A separate waterproof label duplicating the external label was placed inside the sample bucket. All samples were fixed with phosphate buffered 10% formalin in seawater to a final formalin concentration of approximately 5% on arrival back ashore. |
