Abstract:
As part of the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), Lincs Marine Licence (Licence Number: L/2011/00111/8) and under Natural England request, RSK was commissioned by Centrica to undergo botanical surveys to monitor the recovery of saltmarsh vegetation affected following cable trenching operations associated with the Lincs Offshore Wind Farm. This report presents the results of the second year of botanical monitoring surveys carried out in connection with the trenching of two cables (Nearshore Western Cable and Nearshore Eastern Cable) for the Lincs Offshore Wind Farm. It provides the survey findings for botanical monitoring completed in September 2013 for both cables. As per the agreed monitoring schedule (RSK 2011a-c), further reports will be submitted on an annual basis for the next four years until (and including) 2016 for the eastern cable and 2017 for the western cable. The aim of the botanical survey was to monitor vegetation recovery in areas crossed by cable installation activities (impacted areas) with vegetation in unaffected areas (control areas). The botanical monitoring consisted of a National Vegetation Classification (NVC) survey of the consent corridor; seven transects located in the main saltmarsh zones and a subjective assessment made during the walkover.

As with the previous year’s surveys, the methods focused on two main aspects: • a rapid assessment of each cable route to include a photographic record of vegetation along the cable trench and a qualitative description of vegetation structure and condition. This survey involved recording pre-determined attributes from a 1 metre quadrat at 20 m intervals across the marsh. The aim of this survey was to assess the impacts over time and to determine how quickly vegetation recovered along the actual trench line. The length of the cable route through saltmarsh vegetation was approximately1 640 m, which resulted in 32 stopping points. The survey points for the rapid assessment of the eastern cables and western cable routes are shown in Figure 1. • a transect survey monitoring vegetation along seven 20-30 m transects covering upper, middle and lower saltmarsh communities in the construction corridor. The transect survey recorded vegetation along transects perpendicular to the cable route, so that each transect recorded unaffected saltmarsh, trampled vegetation and the trenched area. Individual transects are designed to capture variation in species composition along the transect direction, and the use of multiple transects along the length of the cable corridor ensures that sufficient data are collected in the four main vegetation zones. The creek banks of Big Tom often formed a natural end point to each transect to the east of the trench. |
