Metadata: 2010-2011, Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Ltd., (CMACS), Gwynt y Mor Offshore Wind Farm, Pre-construction Baseline Benthic Grab Survey
Abstract:
Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm (GYM) pre-construction (baseline) benthic ecology survey undertaken in September/October 2010. The survey is part of a programme to monitor the status of benthic organisms and seabed sediments to allow the identification of any significant adverse effects resulting from the construction and operation of GYM OWF. The benthic ecology monitoring programme was informed by characterisation surveys undertaken at the GYM OWF site for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in 2005. Survey methods comprised grab and beam trawl sampling, as used in 2005, with the addition of drop-down camera deployment for areas where there had previously been difficulty obtaining samples due to hard substratum.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The benthic grab sampling was completed by the survey vessel ‘Aquadynamic’ operating from Conwy Marina on a daily ‘port return’ basis during 21st-29th September 2010. A standard weighted 0.1m2 Day grab suitable for use on the anticipated ground types of the area was used. 48 grab sites were visited and three replicate grab samples for faunal and sediment analyses were obtained successfully from 41 locations (see Figure 3.2-1 for grab site locations). At each station the survey vessel was positioned to within 5m of the target point using DGPS and actual sample position recorded to ± 2 m. The trawling part of the survey programme was conducted by the vessel ‘Halcyon Days’ operating daily from the Port of Liverpool from 27th September-3rd October 2010. All 30 trawl sites were sampled successfully (see Figure 3.2-3) but some of the site positioning deviated from the original survey plan due to the proximity of offshore pipelines. The camera survey was completed on 3rd October 2010 also by the survey vessel ‘Aquadynamic’ operating from Conwy Marina on a daily basis. Camera locations sampled are provided in Figure 3.2-2. 17 sites were surveyed at locations inshore from the GYM site and the location of these sites was chosen as grab samples had failed from this area during the characterisation survey, as discussed above. During the 2010 baseline survey grab sites 11, 21, 22, 23 and 45 failed to yield a sample to pass the QC measures. These sites were then added to the camera survey and visited with the drop down camera. Figure 3.2-2 also displays these failed grab site locations which were re-surveyed using the camera. |
