Metadata: 2011, CMACS, Zone 9 Celtic Array, Spring Benthic Fish Trawl Survey
Abstract:
The survey was carried out by CMACS - Centre for Marine & Coastal Studies In 2011 on behalf of CERI (now Celtic Array). This spring 2011 survey is the 2nd 4m beam trawl survey within the Irish Sea Round 3 Development Zone. The survey contributed to a programme of environmental monitoring at the site . The initial autumn 2010 survey provided the first set of annual 4m beam trawl survey data designed to sample demersal fish and epifauna present in and around the zone. This second survey undertaken in spring 2011 provided further results to supplement the 2010 survey to enable the assessment of fish and epifaunal species in and around the Zone. This study was a basis for the characterisation of the Zone in terms of the natural fish resource and epibenthic communities. It also provided additional information to inform other ZAP assessments such as ornithology. This report presents the results of the final spring survey identifying the main demersal and epifaunal species present as well as their size class distributions and provides some comparison with the autumn trawl survey undertaken in 2010. It also included a desk study on fish spawning grounds within the Zone and provided information on vessel activity and marine mammal sightings within the Zone during the two survey periods. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Survey methodology was agreed with the main statutory agencies (JNCC, Cefas and CCW) and twenty-five survey locations across the zone were identified. The autumn survey was conducted over four days in early November 2010 and sampled twenty-two of the twenty-five sites due to inclement weather. The Spring 2011 survey was conducted over 5 days and all 25 sites were successfully sampled. Trawls were undertaken using a 4m beam trawl with a 40mm inserted mesh cod end. All fish and epifaunal species were identified and recorded with commercial fish being measured and elasmobranchs measured and sexed. |
