Metadata: 2012, University of Bangor and University of Liverpool, Zone 9 - Celtic Array, Prediction of Sediment Wave Migration
Abstract:
Liverpool and Bangor Universities predicted the level of sediment migration for the Centrica round 3 Irish Sea - Zone 9 Offshore wind farm development. Geophysical and geological data was collected by Van Landeghem et al. during the AmSedIS project (research cruise CV12007), documenting sediment waves of all shapes and sizes and in different areas of the Irish Sea, and uniquely collected data on granulometric variation of sediment in a linear trough-to-trough transects perpendicular to sediment wave crests. The CV12007 data overlaps several existing datasets, including the Centrica data collected in the Round 3 Irish Sea (R3IS) Zone. From 22 sediment waves in various places of the Irish Sea, sediment grabs in transect were analysed for granulometric variations, while the sediment wave was measured for its height and migration rate. From this data, Liverpool and Bangor Universities produced GIS outputs for the prediction of sediment migration. Corresponding Centrica Document Title: Prediction of sediment wave migration. Corresponding Centrica Document No: R3-D-EV-027-0132-000000-001. Available Datasets and supporting documentation: 1. Shapefiles (.shp) 2. Rasters 3. Excel(.xls, .mp4) 4. Documents (.pdf)

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Methodology: From all available datasets, a correlation was sought between (1) geometrical, (2) dynamical, (3) geological and (4) environmental parameters: (1) The size of several hundreds of sediment waves was determined, both in the R3 IS Zone and in the other CV12007 areas. This was added to existing records in the Irish Sea. (2) Where sediment wave crests are clearly recognised over time, the migration over time have been measured, and converted to annualised migration rates. (3) Over nearly 200 sediment samples were analysed for granulometric variations in Bangor University. This dataset was added to the existing sediment data in the Irish Sea and in Liverpool Bay (Centrica grab samples) (4) Values of bed stress were derived from the published dataset by Uehara et al., 2006; water depth was derived from the swath bathymetry data, processed to Lowest Astronomical Tide From these relationships, estimated sediment wave migration was assigned to sediment wave fields with similar characteristics in the R3IS Zone. These fields were manually delineated and represented by polygons in an ArcGIS shapefile. Further information is available in report: R3-D-EV-027-0132-000000-001 |
