Metadata: 2005, ABPmer, COWRIE Research, Potential Impact of Round 2 Offshore Wind Farms on Sediment Transport
Abstract:
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has commissioned ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer) to investigate the issue of sediment pathways and large-scale offshore wind farms as part of a series of supporting technical investigations related to the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) for marine renewable energy. This work builds on the Phase 1 SEA for offshore wind (BMT Cordah, 2003) which was completed in anticipation of the second round of site leasing (Round 2) for the three strategic interest areas commonly referred to as; Thames, Greater Wash and North West (Liverpool Bay). This report is also a companion to a qualitative review of sand banks, sediment pathways and offshore wind farms by Kenyon & Cooper, 2004, and extends earlier generic research funded by DTI, prior to Round 1, on the issue of potential effects of offshore wind developments on coastal processes (Cooper ; Beiboer, 2002).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A quantified assessment of sand transport is reported here based on a generalised configuration of a large offshore wind farm tested against a flux of sand in transport responding to a tidal mechanism. Numerical modelling tools are applied to test the hypothesis that a large offshore wind farm might interfere with a sediment pathway. |
