Metadata: 2012-2013, HiDef, Zone 3 - Dogger Bank, Aerial Bird Surveys of Dogger Bank (Ultra High Resolution Video)
Abstract:
The overall objective of the task was to undertake aerial surveys of seabirds within the Dogger Bank renewable energy zone (Round 3 - Zone 3) on a monthly basis within the calendar months from November 2012 until November 2013. The surveys focused on the Tranche C area of Dogger Bank. This series contains monthly reports, spreadsheets and ArcGIS geodatabases containing observations and tracks.
Data holder:
The Crown Estate

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The methodology being used for the Forewind contract has been developed by HiDef Aerial Surveying Ltd and is based on aerial surveys using digital imaging equipment. The methodology for video survey of waterbirds was developed by HiDef in conjunction with JNCC. Field trials of this system have demonstrated its ability to meet or exceed the performance requirements specified within the BTO report with current method and protocol directives endorsed by all relevant stake holders including JNCC, SNH, CCW, Natural England, Defra, MFA and The Crown Estate. Aerial surveys are flown in VFR conditions and either at 1250ft or 1800ft. High definition video images are taken of the survey area, which is over-flown in a pre-planned series of transects, using GPS to ensure accuracy; transects are selected to provide the degree of area coverage required by the client. For this survey transects were aligned North-South and were 7.5 km apart over the main survey area and 2.5 km apart over a detailed survey area (Tranche C). The recorded images are stored on heavy duty disk drives. Following the survey, the disk drives are couriered back to the HiDef premises for review and analysis. The survey images are viewed by trained reviewers using high definition viewing screens and a software image management package that allows the reviewer to adjust and control the appearance of the images and so determine which are birds, mammals etc. Reviewers are not required to identify objects, but simply mark the image as requiring further analysis. Images that have been marked as requiring further analysis are passed to specialist ornithologists who have received training in the analysis of high definition video imagery. Images can be managed using software to enhance their appearance and assist the ornithologist in identifying the object down to species level. HiDef was contracted to fly surveys every month for the period between November 2012 and November 2013. |
