Metadata: 2012, Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Ltd. (CMACS), West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm, Pre-Construction Benthic Baseline Survey
Abstract:
Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Ltd (CMACS) was appointed by JV West of Duddon Sands Ltd (JV WoDS) to undertake baseline benthic ecological characterisation surveys for the West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm (WoDS OWF). The WoDS OWF is a consented development and will comprise 108 x 3.6MW wind turbines located in the North East Irish Sea. The wind farm site will provide a maximum generation capacity of 389MW and will be connected to the national grid transmission system by means of a subsea export cable with landfall proposed at Heysham, Lancashire. Construction work is planned to commence in 2013 with commissioning expected in 2014. WoDS OWF location is relatively close to a number of other planned or consented offshore wind farms in the North East Irish Sea (Figure 1). The overall aim of the survey was to obtain baseline data on the subtidal benthic environment (specifically benthic macroinvertebrate infauna and sediments) to support a programme of monitoring to meet conditions set out in the project FEPA Licence (deemed Marine Licence) 33317/10/01. The survey was undertaken as a combined mobilisation with monitoring at Walney I and II and Ormonde offshore wind farms. Offshore survey work at WoDS commenced on 20 May and was completed on 20 June 2012.
