Metadata: 2004, Subacoustech Ltd., Measurements of Underwater Noise During Construction of Offshore Wind Farms and Comparison With Background Noise
Abstract:
This project examines underwater noise studies carried out by Subacoustech Ltd on behalf of Collaborative for Offshore Wind Research Into the Environment (COWRIE). The impacts of waterborne noise are not completely understood but is has been expressed that possible effects of man made underwater noise include behaviour change, physical injury (such as deafness) and even death in marine mammals and fish. The purpose of this project is to measure pre-existing background noise and to rate noise from construction and operation of wind farms in terms of its potential for environmental effect. These measurements will aid estimation and minimisation of the impact of noise during the lifecycle (construction, operation and decommissioning) of wind farms.

| Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 5272 |
| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2004, Subacoustech Ltd., Measurements of Underwater Noise During Construction of Offshore Wind Farms and Comparison With Background Noise |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | b2b3021cf3ff559a88d41afb172c6af4 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | 847 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2004 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2004 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | unknown |
| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | This project examines underwater noise studies carried out by Subacoustech Ltd on behalf of Collaborative for Offshore Wind Research Into the Environment (COWRIE). These measurements will aid estimation and minimisation of the impact of noise during the lifecycle (construction, operation and decommissioning) of wind farms. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The report presents a significant body of underwater noise measurements taken in the period 4/2003 to 1/2004 at operational and construction stage windfarm sites in the UK. A detailed analysis of the measurements has been made which indicates the spatial, temporal and statistical properties of the noise. An estimation of the likely behavioural and physical effects on a selection of the most common species of fish and marine mammals is also presented using both conventional analysis and the dBht (species) scale. |
