Metadata: 2010, Fugro, Zone 3 Dogger Bank, Geotechnical Site Investigation
Abstract:
At the request of Forewind Limited, Fugro GeoConsulting Limited acted as the main contractor for a geotechnical site investigation at the Dogger Bank Wind Farm site. The proposed field work was performed using four different vessels: the M/V Gargano from 03 October to 02 November 2010, the M/V Commander from 20 October to 22 November 2010, the M/V Saltire from 19 October 2010 to 07 December 2010 and the M/V Bucentaur from 27 November to 27 December 2010. The objective of this investigation was to provide geotechnical information for the development of a wind farm site. The water depth was approximately 21.1 m to 48.1 m corrected to Lowest Astronomical Tide. In total, 49 boreholes were performed at the 41 proposed borehole locations. An additional 109 seabed CPTs were performed at the proposed wind farm site to complement the soil conditions across the site.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Once the vessel was on position, a conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) profile of the water column was undertaken before drilling, sampling and testing operations could commence. Drilling was performed through a central moonpool using a top drive power swivel. The equipment includes a fixed derrick rig, mud mixing and pumping unit, as well as other tools and accessories required to carry out the investigation. A heave motion compensator was fitted to the power swivel to ensure the drill bit maintained a uniform pressure during drilling operations. An ample supply of drilling mud was provided and a spare string of drillpipe, sufficient spare parts and other supplies were available onboard to ensure no delays during the investigation. A range of thin-walled and thick-walled shelby tubes were used to obtain soil samples and a range of core catchers were used when poor recovery was experienced in non-cohesive soils. Push sample tubes were 63 mm to 76 mm outside diameter (OD). Tubes of 50 mm OD were used in very dense granular soils when the 63 mm to 76 mm OD tubes were not able to achieve the necessary recovery. Immediately after recovery, the samples were extruded from their sample tubes, a photograph was taken and the sample was logged. Based on the visual description, some basic index tests were performed, including moisture content determination, bulk and dry density determination, pocket penetrometer, torvane and unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests. Downhole WISON® and CPTs were performed during the investigation, using Fugro’s SEACLAM® system, details of which are presented in Appendix 5 of Fugro Field Report (Report No. J11047-01 (04)). Seabed CPTs were performed using Fugro’s Seabed SEACALF® system, details of which are presented in Appendix 7 of Fugro Field Report (Report No. J11047-01 (04)). The onshore tests were performed at Fugro’s Laboratories in Wallingford, Houston and Edinburgh (Fugro ERT Limited), the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and at Severn Trent Laboratories Limited (chemical tests). Geotechnical tests performed included basic classification tests (Particle Size Distribution (PSD), particle density and plasticity index), chemical tests, CRS oedometer tests, direct simple shear tests, consolidated triaxial tests, ring shear tests, shear box tests and BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene, Xylene) headspace gas analysis tests. |
