Metadata: 2013, ABPmer, Zone 9 - Celtic Array, Physical Processes Assessment
Abstract:
This study forms Chapter 7 of the Stage 2 Preliminary Environmental Information (Stage 2 PEI) of the Rhiannon Offshore Wind Farm, which is part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The study was carried out by ABPmer and it describes existing environment with regard to Physical Processes and assesses the potential impacts of the Offshore Development area of the proposed Rhiannon Wind Farm (RWF). The study characterises the marine physical environment which is defined here as the water quality, hydrodynamic, geomorphological and sedimentary regime that operates within the Wind Farm Site (the Site) and across the surrounding study area. This is within the eastern part of the Irish Sea and it assesses the potential effects of the Offshore Development on physical process and related receptors. The work presented here builds upon the physical process studies carried out to support the Zonal Assessment Process (ZAP) that was completed in 2012 (Celtic Array 2012a). A summary of the ZAP physical process assessments is presented in Appendix 7.1 This study is closely linked to Chapter 6 Geology and Sediment; Chapter 8 Nature conservation; Chapter 9 Benthic ecology and Chapter 10 Fish ecology of the Stage 2 Preliminary Environmental Information (Stage 2 PEI) and should be read in conjunction with Appendix 7.1 ZAP Physical Processes Assessment; Appendix 7.2 Model Calibration; Appendix 7.3 Water and Sediment Quality; Appendix 7.4 Initial Metric Calculations; and Appendix 7.5 Scour Assessment.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Previously a data review and gap analysis was carried out during the initial phase of ZAP- Zona Appraisal, this informed a preliminary, high level characterisation of the physical environment and subsequent metocean and geophysical survey campaigns which took place between October 2010 and October 2011. This study focused on a refined spatial area, drawing on specific details now available for the Offshore Development throug previous campaign, and considered local scale effects in a higher level of detail required. The baseline characterisation applied a combination of the evidence base developed during the ZAP, additional survey data, desk based analytical techniques, numerical modelling and expert judgement to define key effect pathways (namely the hydrodynamic and sedimentary regime), and the inherent sensitivity of physical processes receptors. To support this characterisation, further metocean surveys were carried out within the Proposed Rhiannon Site and Export Cable Area, these comprised a 10 month rolling deployment programme of bottom mounted ADCPs, covering four locations within the Site. A geophysical survey of the Export Cable Area, was completed during autumn 2012. This captured high resolution bathymetry data and data pertaining to seabed sediments and shallow, subsurface geology, providing a continuation of the geophysical data collected for ZAP. Geotechnical Site investigations were also carried out during 2012. These included the collection of borehole data that has been used to determine the vertical seabed structure within Offshore Development (Fugro 2013; Reynolds International 2013; and Parsons Brinkerhoff 2013). The regional scale Delft3D model was developed to support the ZAP assessments has been further refined in order to improve the level of detail within the Site and the Export Cable Area . The model was also updated using the high resolution bathymetry data collected within Export Cable Area and was subject to further validation against data from the metocean survey. Full details of the model development and calibration are presented in Appendix 7.2 to this PEI. |
