Metadata: 2001, Hydrosearch, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2, Performance Appraisal Report on Geophysical Surveys
Abstract:
This project details the geophysical and environmental investigation surveys carried out at the site of the Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm. The Gunfleet Sands Offshore wind farm is located in the Outer Thames Estuary. Titan Environmental Surveys Ltd were appointed by Enron Wind Gunfleet Ltd to carry out the surveys. The objectives of the geophysical investigation were to provide accurate seabed and sub-seabed information to assist the engineering design and installation of up to 30 wind turbines located within the survey area. In addition, a 500m wide corridor for the planned power cables associated with the wind farm development was surveyed between a possible landfall at Holland-on-Sea and the survey area. It is concluded that, in spite of the spells of bad weather, the survey programme and objectives were completed successfully. Statistically, for surveys in the September/October period, one should anticipate at least 30% time lost to weather and this in fact proved to be the case. It is difficult to see any way that Titan could have performed the work more quickly.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Primary navigation employed Trimble 4400 DGPS in RTK mode with a secondary system being provided by Trimble AG132 with GLA differential corrections. A base station was established at a control point on Clacton pier for the duration of the survey. Titan’s survey report will detail fully the pre-and post-survey calibrations undertaken. DGPS positioning provided a better than 3m accuracy throughout the survey area and a minimum of 5 satellites with acceptable geometrical constraints were always available. The onboard navigation system employed Trimble HYDRO Pro software for recording of positional data. Data was annotated with fix and event marks for all the survey recorders with data stored to disc and output as hardcopy record. To monitor positioning quality a range of QC positioning parameters were available on-line. |
