Metadata: 2014, Royal Haskoning DHV, Kentish Flats Extension, Intertidal Phase 1 Survey
Abstract:
A pre-construction Phase 1 intertidal survey was undertaken for the Kentish Flats Extension Offshore Wind Farm at the export cable landfall site, adjacent to Hampton Pier, Herne Bay. The objective of the survey was to provide a baseline for identifying any changes that may occur following construction of the landfall site, due to occur in July 2015. The survey was carried out on the 10th September 2014 during a spring low tide to allow as much of the intertidal area to be surveyed as possible. The survey was conducted for approximately 2 hours either side of low tide. Prior to the survey, maps were annotated with the assistance of previous biotope maps and aerial photographs. During the survey all biotopes were recorded and their spatial extent mapped using Ordnance Survey maps as a baseline. Any species encountered were recorded as target notes. The majority of the shore is sandy and is classed as LS.LSa.MuSa.MacAre (Macoma balthica and Arenicola marina in littoral muddy sand), with a barren shingle ridge present at the upper shore (LS.LCS.Sh.BarSh). The remains of the old Hampton Pier comprised of boulders covered with mussels and barnacles (LR.LHR.MusB.MytB). The distribution of these biotopes is similar to those recorded in the 2002 survey for the existing Kentish Flats export cable landfall area. An additional biotope of Barnacles and Littorina spp. on unstable eulittoral mixed substrata (LR.FLR.Eph.BLitX) was recorded during this survey, adjacent to the littoral rock, comprising of cobbles over sediment. The cobbles were covered with barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides) and occasional mussels (Mytilus edulis).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | An intertidal Phase 1 walkover survey was conducted at the proposed cable route landfall site, adjacent to Hampton Pier, Herne Bay. The survey was conducted by a suitably qualified marine ecologist and followed guidance set out in the Handbook for Marine Intertidal Phase 1 Biotope Mapping Survey (Wyn et al. 2006) and the JNCC’s Marine Habitat Classification system for Britain and Ireland Version 04.05 (Connor et al. 2004). The survey was undertaken either side of low tide to ensure that as much of the intertidal zone as possible was surveyed. |
