Metadata: 2010, 6 Alpha Associates, Zone 7 Navitus Bay West Isle of Wight, UXO Survey
Abstract:
The overarching aim of the UXO assessment is to review each shipwreck and determine whether the buffer can be reduced from the “standard” 500m. The supporting objectives are to: • Determine if previous geophysical surveys have identified the wrecks; • Establish positional accuracy of the wrecks; • Evaluate the wreck history, specifically for UXO; • Undertake a qualitative risk assessment for each wreck based on the aforementioned factors; • Produce criteria to determine a reasonable avoidance buffer.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2010, 6 Alpha Associates, Zone 7 Navitus Bay West Isle of Wight, UXO Survey |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | c93e8e1ed83bc6f628458d98af860473 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | UXOs |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2026-04-19 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2026-04-19 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |
| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | To undertake this assessment the following methodology was adopted: â?¢ Wherever possible, the cause of sinking was established; â?¢ Confirm whether munitions were on-board at the time of sinking. If so, confirm the type and quantity of munitions carried; â?¢ Determine the positional accuracy according to the historical data. For the purposes of this report 6 Alpha have graded the positional accuracy of the wrecks using the following three categories: o Good â?? Wreck that has been identified and corroborated during previous geophysical surveys; o Moderate â?? Discrepancy between positional data sources; o Poor â?? No evidence of positional accuracy found. â?¢ Determine whether the wreck is intact or if it has broken up. And in the latter case whether there is related debris; â?¢ Review the geophysical data captured during the early stages of the project to see if this survey had covered the wreck location and if so, whether it had identified the shipwreck; â?¢ For the shipwrecks that were identified from the geophysical survey, there was the option to refine the positional accuracy. However both the original and new coordinates have been presented within this report for completeness; â?¢ Conduct a qualitative risk assessment based on the findings for the aforementioned stages and then set avoidance distance parameters. |
