Metadata: 2002, Wessex Archaeology, Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm, Environmental Assessment: Archaeology
Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology has been commissioned by Hydrosearch Associates Ltd to prepare an archaeological desk-based assessment of the potential effects on archaeological remains of the proposed Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm development off the South Essex coast and the associated connection works on land. The principle sources consulted in this assessment were: Records of wrecks, obstructions and casualties from the National Monuments Record, Records held by the receiver of wreck, records held by the United Kingdom Hydrographic office (UKHO), Records of known archaeological sites and finds from the Essex Heritage Conservation Record (EHCR), Records of known terrestrial sites and finds from NMR, Aerial photographs held by the NMR and geophysical data provided by Titan Environmental Surveys Ltd. A site visit was undertaken on the 7th and 8th May 2002 in order to examine the line of the cable route, on the foreshore and inland, at Holland-on-Sea. The inspection was carried out on such areas as were publicly and safely accessible. The outcome of this assessment is for potential development mitigation to be implemented for both maritime and terrestrial elements. The maritime element, development mitigation includes: exclusion zones around the significant geophysical anomalies, archaeological assessment of any further geophysical and/or vibrocore surveys; archaeological involvement in any pre-disturbance surveys. For terrestrial elements, development mitigation includes: archaeological assessment of any vibrocore surveys within the inter-tidal zone and on the foreshore; further trial pitting as required following the core assessments; and a range of potential further work inland that will depend upon the construction methodology employed. It is proposed that all aspects of any further archaeological work be detailed within a written scheme of investigation.
