Abstract:
ABP Marine Environmental Research has completed a comprehensive investigation of the coastal process regime to characterise the baseline conditions and determine the effects that the installation of an offshore wind farm may have on these conditions. Consideration has been given to issues related to the immediate area of the proposed development site on Gunfleet Sand as well as the regional context across the Outer Thames Estuary. The outcome of these investigations suggests that local interference to wave and tidal regimes will occur around in the immediate vicinity of any structure placed on the sea bed but that these effects dissipate rapidly to have no measurable influence at sites remote from the installation. The main consequence related to local disturbance to wave and tidal regimes is to increase the near-field turbulent intensity of the flow environment which the provides the mechanism for scour development.
