Metadata: 2002, Amphibian Reptile and Mammal Conservation, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2, Protected Species Assessment
Abstract:
Amphibian, Reptile and Mammal Conservation Ltd were contracted by Hydrosearch Associated Ltd to undertake a protected species and BAP species walk-over habitat assessment to determine the potential impact of three potential cable routes from Holland haven Country park, near Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, to an existing electricity station north west of Great Holland Common. Surveys have confirmed the presence of Great Crested Newts in the pond within the former quarry area close to the existing toilet block in the Country Park and adjacent to the proposed site for the directional drilling compound. A licence from DEFRA will, therefore, be required regardless of which cable route is finally chosen. This would necessitate the installation of amphibian exclusion fencing and, depending on the habitat enclosed, a trapping programme to remove animals from the footprint. The habitat assessment has confirmed the presence of Water Vole, Brown Hare, Barn Owl and two species of reptiles within the survey corridor. At least two other reptile species, Adder and Slow-worm, are known to exist within the general area. Since all three of the proposed routes commence from the quarry area in the Country Park, the impact of the scheme on reptiles will be high and will probably necessitate a translocation on some scale depending upon the actual location within the site. A further assessment in this area will be required once the precise route-line is known.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Hydrosearch Associated Limited contracted Amphibian, Reptile and Mammal Conservation Ltd to conduct the surveys. Prior to the commencement of the “walk-over” habitat assessment a search was undertaken of the County Herpetofauna Database and County Mammal Database to identify any existing records from the area. Each of the three potential routes were then walked by the report’s author between 15th and 20th May 2002 to make a subjective assessment of the suitability of the various habitats present for different taxa and individual species. Any direct observations of the target species were also noted and a record was kept of all mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds seen as part of a “best practice” recording protocol (see appendix at the end of this report). Areas of potential reptile habitat were also mapped in detail for further survey work (see end of report). All visits were undertaken at a suitable time of the year for making the necessary assessments and completed in weather conditions appropriate to the target groups. |
