Metadata: 2009, CMACS, Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm, Benthic Survey
Abstract:
The report in this series covers pre-development baseline survey work carried out on the benthic environment for the Ormonde and Walney Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) developments. Surveys were carried out during April and May 2009. The surveys involved camera and grab sampling at 49 sites, covering the two OWF sites, a number of reference sites in the surrounding areas, and the proposed cable route, as well as 2m scientific beam trawl surveys at five of the same sites along the proposed cable route. Attempts to obtain towed video at the two OWF sites failed due to extreme turbidity, but still images were obtained at the 49 sites due to the use of a low-visibility camera fitted with a clear water lens. Grab samples were obtained by Day grab at 43 of the sites. Six sites were too coarse to sample by Day grab and attempts to sample them subsequently with a mini-Hamon also failed. Four of these sites were along the proposed cable route while the other two were inshore of it.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | CMACS Ltd was commissioned to carry out pre-development benthic ecology surveys in respect of the proposed development of the Walney and Ormonde Offshore Wind Farms. Survey methods and sample locations were determined by others and confirmed to CMACS by RSK Environment. Forty nine locations covering the cable route, the planned development areas and a number of reference sites were surveyed by drop down video camera, followed wherever possible by benthic grab sampling for sediment analysis (single samples) and benthic faunal analysis (three samples at each location). The cable route was surveyed by 2m scientific beam trawls, with tows being carried out at five locations along the proposed route. Towed video was requested at the centre of each proposed development where 500m long tows were planned. The surveys were carried out in spring, during the period 18th April – 29th May 2009. |
