Metadata: 2013, Gardline and Titan, Westermost Rough, Benthic Survey
Abstract:
Titan Environmental Surveys Ltd was commissioned by DONG Energy to undertake a benthic survey for the proposed Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) and Export Cable Route. The proposed OWF site is a Round 2 wind farm project and is situated approximately 8 km off the Yorkshire coast. The scope of work addresses the requirements to monitor benthos through preconstruction surveys as required under the Marine Licence. The design of the survey takes into account data collected during the Environmental Impact Assessment surveys at Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm in 2009 (DONG Energy, 2009), in addition to more recent baseline surveys, primarily geophysical surveys and camera surveys performed between 2009 and 2012. The monitoring programme consists of grab sampling and drop down camera deployment. The survey stations have been selected based on the known sediment conditions at the wind farm site and along the cable route, and based on experiences from earlier sampling in the area. The sample stations represent the diversity of sediment conditions and biotope distribution in the area. A total of 21 sampling stations (Figure 1.2) were targeted where both sediment samples and drop camera deployment will be performed. The stations have been selected to ensure that the monitoring strives towards covering all biotopes present in the three impact zones (primary, secondary, reference) and that data from monitoring is sufficient in order to reach conclusions from data analysis. By representing the diversity of sediment conditions and biotope distribution in the area, a baseline description of the benthic ecology in the area has been presented through: • Identifying type and location of feature through faunal analysis and Particle Size Analysis (PSA) for all stations. This is supported by drop down camera surveys at all stations. • Abundance and diversity of species through faunal analysis and drop down camera surveys at all stations • Relation to Annex I habitat and non-Annex I features through drop down camera surveys at all stations, and • Sediment deposition and sediment size through drop down camera survey and PSA analysis at all stations.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Grab samples were collected using a weighted Mini Hamon grab capable area of 0.1m2. The grab was fitted with hinged doors to both protect the sample during recovery and to allow inspection of the undisturbed sample surface. Grab deployment and recovery was achieved by using the hydraulic crane and winch system onboard the Fairline Surveyor, as shown in Figure 3.2. |
