Metadata: 2023, Subacoustech, Marine Characterisation Research Project, Monitoring and modelling of underwater noise (WP10)
Abstract:
This data series was collected for the Marine Characterisation project (MCRP) which forms part of the Morlais tidal energy project, managed by Menter Môn and funded by the European Regional Development Fund and The Crown Estate. The Morlais Demonstration Zone (MDZ) is a region of the Irish Sea to the west of Anglesey that has been identified as suitable for operation of Tidal Energy Converter devices (TECs). Four acoustic transects were conducted within the MDZ to investigate the pre-existing background noise levels. This is part of the first step towards assessing potential underwater noise that could be generated by these devices and allows for assessment of the impacts these devices could have on marine life present in the area. Access to the MCRP data is strictly subject to the MCRP Data Terms of Use. Please ensure that you read and understand the Terms of Use prior to using any of the data as you will be bound to comply with the same. The MCRP Terms of Use are the prevailing Terms of Use and supersede that of Marine Data Exchange Terms of Use in relation to MCRP data.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The TAST was deployed from a vessel on 11th February 2023 at 11:24 within an area defined as the Survey Area. This was an area which, at the time of the survey, was assumed to be a key area of interest in which the tidal turbines would likely be installed. The TAST was deployed in a region within the Survey Area with a relatively consistent current, heading roughly northwest to north. While the vessel was drifting, the TAST was lowered into the water via a V-shaped cradle. The V-shaped cradle allowed for the TAST to be supported in a fixed orientation to help account for acoustic directionality. The TAST transmitted noise of three signal types between 1 kHz and 10 kHz at random (mid/high, low, and broadband frequencies), all of which may be used when installed on the TECs. The noise monitoring equipment, including the hydrophone, was deployed from a separate vessel. The hydrophone was suspended over the side of this vessel from an anti-heave (spar) buoy to minimise surface wave noise, and the signal lead was supported with pellet buoys to prevent the line from sinking. Ideally the TAST would have been operated from a fixed location, with a monitoring station located at controlled positions around it. The rapid currents in the MDZ meant that the TAST vessel could not hold steady from anchor and so the measurements were taken on a GPS-logged drift. With both vessels drifting, this had the advantage that they moved at approximately the same speed and direction, which allowed them to maintain a fairly constant separation. |
