Metadata: 2002-2003, Thales, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2, Oceanographic Measurement Programme
Abstract:
As an integral part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed offshore wind farm development on Gunfleet Sands, offshore Essex, Enron Wind Gunfleet Ltd commissioned an oceanographic measurement programme. Thales Geosolutions (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd, hereafter referred to as Thales, have been contracted to deploy two current/wave meters near Gunfleet Sands for six months. The instruments were deployed either side of the shallow water to identify changes in the current and wave regimes. The equipment was originally deployed on 17th January 2002. The specification for the contract required the proposed instrumentation to measure current speed and direction, tidal levels, directional wave parameters and turbidity. The most appropriate instrument that satisfied all these requirements was the Valeport 730D; the standard wave, current and tide recorders were modified to include a turbidity sensor. The estimated water depths at the deployment locations were 12 metres for the southern site and 13 metres for the northern location (relative to mean sea level). This series contains the reports and datasets associated with the monitoring programme.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Thales Geosolutions (South Africa) (PTY) Ltd was commissioned by Hydrosearch Associates Ltd to conduct this study. The raw data was converted into ASCII format using the ‘WaveLogT’ program provided by the instrument manufacturer. The ASCII file was then imported into the Matlab environment, where all further data processing and editing was completed using purpose-designed routines. Initial quality control comprised a visual examination of the data. Start and end times were defined using the pressure record in conjunction with the deployment and the recovery sheets for the instrument. Data points collected when the instrument was not on the sea-bed were removed. Current directions were rotated from magnetic to true north using a magnetic variation of 2.4° W. |
