Metadata: 2010, CMACS, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2, Year 1 Benthic Monitoring
Abstract:
This project details the methodologies and findings of the 2010 Gunfleet Sands benthic grab survey, the first post-costruction benthic monitoring survey. This survey was conducted during May 2010 by the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Ltd (CMACS) from the survey vessel Aquadynamic. The survey undertaken forms part of the FEPA Environment Monitoring Programme (document 02-04-00747). The FEPA licence stipulates that benthic sampling should be undertaken in order to investigate possible changes to the marine benthic communities of the area; such investigations must also be closely linked to possible changes to sediments. The grab survey was carried out in 2010 from 17th to 19th May from the Survey Vessel Aquadynamic operating out of Shotley Marina.

An additional position (Site 30) was added whilst in the field at the request of the client. Triplicate samples were taken at each sampling site except for Site 30 where a single sample was taken for descriptive purposes. Sample locations are displayed in Figure 2. The grab survey was carried out in 2010 from 17th to 19th May from the Survey Vessel Aquadynamic operating out of Shotley Marina. Grab samples were obtained using a 0.1m2 Day grab; this was an equivalent design to that used in the 2007 benthic survey. The grab was deployed using a hydraulic winch while the vessel was held stationary over the target by dynamic positioning linked to differential GPS, providing sub-m positional accuracy for the vessel and 1-3m accuracy for the deployed grab depending on water depth and currents. Upon retrieval of a successful grab, position co-ordinates in UTM, date, time and water depth were recorded (details in Appendix 1 and Appendix 2). |
