Metadata: 2011, APEM, Zone 2 Firth of Forth, Aerial Bird Surveys
Abstract:
Digital aerial surveys of the Firth of Forth Zone were carried out in October 2011. High Resolution stills imagery was used to record birds and marine mammals present in two areas; the Phase I area, surveyed for direct comparison with data from boat surveys, and the wider Firth of Forth Zone. Typical seabird species were recorded, including divers, gannets, fulmars, kittiwakes, herring gulls, black-backed gulls, skuas and auks. Data collected were thoroughly Quality Assured, including 100% internal QA and 10% external QA. Population estimates were produced by design- or model-based estimation methods. Precision of estimates was high, especially for abundant species / groups. The west of the survey area showed generally higher bird densities than the east, and modelled density surfaces reflected this pattern. Marine mammals were comparatively scarce, but two whales and two seals were photographed. These results were compared with estimates from which occurred coincidentally with aerial surveys.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2011, APEM, Zone 2 Firth of Forth, Aerial Bird Surveys |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | e544d4b8-1461-495b-a09d-769bde679799 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | CES-396 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2011-10-26 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2011-10-27 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The Phase I area and wider Firth of Forth Zone aerial surveys were undertaken using Britten-Norman Islander twin engine and P68 Observer twin-engine survey aircraft. These surveys involved High Resolution digital still image collection using a GPS-linked bespoke flight management system. Both areas were surveyed on 27th and 28th October 2011. |
