Metadata: 2014, Whiteford Geoservices Ltd, Neart na Gaoithe Offshore Wind Farm, Onshore East Coast Main Line Geotechnical Survey
Abstract:
Mainstream Renewable Power Limited is currently developing the Neart na Gaoithe Offshore Wind Farm, located 15.5 km off Fife Ness on the east coast of Scotland. Whiteford Geoservices Ltd were commissioned by Mainstream Renewable Power Limited, on behalf of Neart na Gaoithe Offshore Wind Limited, to undertake a geotechnical investigation at Thortonloch, East Lothian. Two (2) no. subsea transmission cables carrying electricity from the Neart na Gaoithe offshore site will reach landfall at Thortonloch beach, approximately 10km southeast of Dunbar, Scotland. From this point to the proposed grid connection point at Crystal Rig wind farm, 2 no. onshore underground transmission cables (installed in the same trench) will be constructed of approximately 12.3km in length. As part of the development process and in order to inform the detailed design of the transmission cable, a geotechnical and topographical survey was undertaken at the East Coast main Line railway crossing along the Neart na Gaoithe onshore cable route. These survey works were carried out within the onshore development boundary of the Neart na Gaoithe project, adjacent to the ECML railway line.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Fieldwork was undertaken in accordance with BS 5930+A2 (2010), BS EN 1997-2 (2007) and BS EN ISO 22475-1 (2006) and related standards. The testing schedule, agreed by Mainstream Renewable Power Limited, was performed in accordance with BS 1377 (1990) unless otherwise stated. At each exploratory trial hole 2 Nr. individual thermal resistivity readings were taken at approximately 1.0m below ground level, then averaged to obtain a final value of Soil Thermal Resistivity within each trial pit excavation. Ten additional in-situ thermal resistivity readings were taken for samples recovered from borehole BH1. A Decagon KD2 Thermal Resistivity meter was employed to carry out this testing. Cable manufactures call for a maximum Thermal Resistivity value of 1.20Km/W to be available in the material surrounding a 33Kv cable. Thermal resistivity recorded in excess of this amount is deemed to be outside the specification and calls for the use of a preferential backfill material. |
