Metadata: 2002-2004, RPS Hydrosearch, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2, Ornithological Monitoring
Abstract:
The Gunfleet Sands Offshore Windfarm Environmental Statement presented data on birds obtained from the following marine surveys: • Boat surveys – undertaken monthly between October 2001 and July 2002 • Aerial surveys – undertaken in January and March 2002 It was agreed, however, that marine bird surveys would continue following consent in order to establish a baseline against which the effects of windfarm construction and operation can be evaluated. This interim monitoring report summarises the outcomes of monitoring surveys undertaken at Gunfleet Sands during the period July 2002 – December 2004.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2002-2004, RPS Hydrosearch, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2, Ornithological Monitoring |
| Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | Ornithological Monitoring |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | e754c00e-4151-483b-b213-4d311594159c |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | TCE-459 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | series |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2002-07-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2004-12-31 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | notPlanned |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Ecoscope was commissioned by Hydrosearch Associates ltd to conduct this study. In summary, boat surveys are taking place within an area of approximately 120km2 including the proposed Gunfleet Sands windfarm area and the sub sea cable route. A 12m boat is used for surveys which follow a standardised pattern of transects that provides coverage for most, if not all, of the survey area. The location of the boat is recorded at regular intervals using handheld GPS. Information on the species, number, age, behaviour, direction and fight height and direction. Cross-referencing the time of observation with the GPS track enables the location of birds to be inferred. For the purposes of this report boat survey data are displayed as aggregate counts (uncorrected) assigned to 1km grid cells. Aerial surveys also follow a standard transect pattern. A high-winged, twin-engined (Partenavia) aircraft is used which enables two observers to simultaneously record the species, number and distance from the aircraft (within defined distance bands) birds observed on either side of the aircraft. As with boat surveys observations are time-logged allowing positions to be inferred subsequently from a GPS track of the flight path. |
