Abstract:
This document outlines an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to mitigate disturbance impacts (potential for barrier effect) on European Protected Species (EPS) species (cetaceans) during Geotechnical works associated with the Kyle Rhea Tidal Stream Array Project The mitigation measures presented here are specifically aimed at minimising risk of an offence of disturbance to EPS i.e. cetaceans, during the geotechnical investigations. Guidance published by JNCC (2008) on deliberate disturbance of EPS, as well as minimising risk or injury or disturbance from seismic surveys (JNCC, 2010a) and pile driving (JNCC, 2010b) has been used in drafting this document.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | In the interests of best practice, and to minimise the potential for any disturbance to cetacean species, Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) will be used. In order to minimise the impacts on species of cetacean the following mitigation will be implemented. A minimum of two JNCC certified MMOs will be used one on the vessel and one shore based (using an established vantage point used during baseline data collection for the EIA) to ensure adequate 360o coverage. There will be clear communication lines between the MMOs and survey vessel. The mitigation strategy will aim to ensure no cetaceans are within the mitigation zone when drilling starts. |
