Metadata: 2023, APEM Limited, UK Celtic Sea Area, Airborne LiDAR Survey
Abstract:
Celtic Sea Power Limited commissioned APEM Limited to undertake an airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) survey across the UK Celtic Sea area in May 2023. The survey was designed to support development of a bird flight height index for the Celtic Sea and combined calibrated airborne LiDAR with high-resolution digital still imagery to collect data on bird flight heights, bird and marine megafauna occurrence, and spatial distribution. The survey was undertaken on 17 May 2023 using two flights, with imagery and LiDAR data subsequently processed and quality assured by APEM. The survey was undertaken as part of the Cornwall FLOW Accelerator (CFA) project, led by Celtic Sea Power Limited in partnership with the University of Exeter, University of Plymouth and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC), with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The dataset was produced from an airborne LiDAR survey undertaken by APEM Limited for Celtic Sea Power Limited on 17 May 2023. The survey used a twin-engine aircraft fitted with a calibrated TopEye 3 LiDAR system and a high-resolution digital still camera system. Two survey flights were completed at approximately 579 m (1,900 ft) above mean sea level, with imagery collected at approximately 2 cm ground sampling distance. Raw LiDAR trajectories were post-processed using Applanix POSPac software, and LiDAR data were combined with corrected flight trajectories to generate accurately georeferenced survey outputs. System calibration and survey verification were undertaken using ground control data, including verification lines near Newquay. Bird locations identified from the digital imagery were matched with LiDAR returns above the sea surface to derive bird flight heights, with confidence assigned according to the number and quality of LiDAR hits. Image interpretation and species identification were internally quality assured by APEM. |
